Label guides
The labels shaped the music. One short guide each. More added over time.
- Impulse! Records · Founded in 1960, Impulse! became the home of spiritual jazz. Coltrane called the shots, and the orange-and-black spine became the sign.
- Strata-East Records · Founded in 1971 by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell, Strata-East let the artists keep their music.
- Black Jazz Records · Twenty albums from Oakland between 1971 and 1975. Black cover, white lettering, and a spiritual, political sound.
- Nimbus West Records · A one-man label started in 1978 to document Horace Tapscott and the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra in Los Angeles.
